HMRC assigns you a tax code, which your employer or pension provider uses to estimate how much tax you should pay.

If your tax code is incorrect, you may be paying too much or too little tax, therefore it's critical to double-check.

Is it possible to get a refund of taxes?

Yes, claiming tax refunds from HMRC is completely free.

In exchange for a portion of your rebate, certain companies may reclaim tax overpayments on your behalf. However, because claiming tax back on your own is pretty simple, you should only use one if you don't think you'll be able to claim on your own.

The only exception is if you have really complicated tax affairs, in which case it's probably best to seek guidance from an experienced accountant.

What is the amount of money I have set aside for myself?

Each year, income tax is deducted from your earnings, but everyone is allowed to earn a specific amount of money before paying tax, which is known as their annual personal allowance.

For the 2018-19 tax year, the personal allowance has been increased to £11,850.

Your tax-free personal allowance is steadily reduced if you earn more than £100,000 each year. If you earn more than £122,000, you will not be eligible for a personal allowance.

However, while this system works reasonably well for someone working one full-time job with a set salary, it is easy to end the year having paid too much tax if you do not fit that description.

Overpayments are reclaimed.

PAYE

PAYE works successfully if you are paid the same amount every month and utilises a tax code to calculate how much tax you should pay.

If your pay changes, you may find yourself paying more tax than necessary.

Similarly, if you are not employed for the entire year, possibly due to the seasonal nature of your job, unemployment, or study, you may not receive the full benefit of your personal allowance and pay too much Income Tax as a result.

Use the HMRC Tax Checker to see if you've paid too much tax and if it's worth requesting a refund.

Self-Evaluation

If you believe you overpaid tax on your Self Assessment tax return, you can request a refund in the same way you can with PAYE.

You can modify your Self Assessment tax return if you want to seek a refund or repair a mistake within 12 months of completing it.

This entails either writing to HMRC to inform them of the changes or filling out an amendment form on the HMRC website.

If you need a refund for a Self Assessment completed more than a year ago, you must submit a claim in writing with the following information:

  • Your overpayment's tax year

  • Why have you paid an excessive amount of tax?

  • A receipt for the tax that has been paid*

  • a duplicate of your signature

  • How do you want to be repaid if you owe money?

Deadline

You have four years to file a claim for a Self Assessment refund, after which you will be unable to file a claim for overpayments.

Visit the following website for more information on how to correct your Self Assessment tax return:

HMRC's official webpage

Alternatively, you can call the HMRC Self Assessment Helpline.

Have you overpaid on your pension?

You'll need the following items to reclaim the tax you pay on your pension, which is equivalent to reclaiming income tax from work:

  • Obtain your paystubs

  • P60

  • P45

  • Information about pension and benefit payments in its entirety

You must then contact HMRC to seek an assessment of your tax contributions, and any required payback will be mailed to you.
